| Application period: | September to November | March to July |
| Deadline for applications: | December | July |
| Selection week: | February | September |
All applications received within the application period prior the publicized deadline will be subjected to a multi-step evaluation procedure.
The first evaluation takes into account the applicants’ national education system, and is carried out by internal experts on the respective educational system. Applications of candidates which meet the requirements of the IMPRS-MCBB are recommended for further assessment by the faculty members, who jointly short-list the candidates to be invited for the interview week in Dresden. Invitations are sent approximately 6 weeks in advance.
During the interview week, each candidate conducts several interviews with faculty members to discuss research experience and interests. The interviews with group leaders result in a first assessment of candidates. All applicants proceed to a final interview with a Selection Committee, which consists of several faculty members. Taking the assessment of interviewing faculty members into account, the Selection Committee evaluates the overall qualification of the candidate, and recommends to the Dean whom to admit to the program.
Offers of admission to the IMPRS-MCBB are made by the end of the selection week. Admission is granted by the Dean following the recommendation of the selection committee. The offers include in general the affiliation to a specific PhD program and a research group. The individual starting date will be agreed with the primary supervisor. For the spring selection, the latest starting date is October 1st of the year of admission. For the fall selection, the latest starting date is February 1st of the year following the year of admission.
