Each year, the PhD students organize a 2-day scientific symposium outside Dresden, which promotes scientific exchange and networking amongst the students. Internationally renowned senior scientists are invited to attend the symposium, to discuss science and related issues with the PhD students.

Every second year the PhD students organize and chair a Career Day, during which invited speakers from academia, industry, scientific journals and funding bodies present alternative careers to the PhD students.
The Dresden Forum on Science and Society was established to foster an informed and multidisciplinary discussion of the social, economic, and political impact of modern life sciences. The main goals are to encourage dialogue between scientists and the lay public; raise awareness among scientists of the impact of scientific research on our society; and to analyze and evaluate the many ways in which scientific discoveries and the social environment influence each other. Students may also participate in the Forum on Science and Society.
The PhD students of the International PhD Program organize a wide variety of clubs and events. Among these are sporting activities, classical and modern concerts, film festivals and social gatherings. Students may also participate in the Forum on Science and Society. Sporting activities held on a regular basis include soccer, basketball, volleyball and ultimate Frisbee. The sporting highlight of the year is the "Biolympics", which is organized each summer.
